If this runs counter to your preconceived notions, you’re not alone. There are several myths that perpetuate the idea that you can’t renovate your home in the winter. But the idea that you should have exterior renovations done only in the warmer months is just that: a myth.
In fact, just the opposite is true: the best time to have new windows and doors installed is during the winter (with a few exceptions).
Below are three common myths around winter door and window installations that just aren’t true.
Myth 1: Installations can’t be performed in cold weather.
This is probably the most widespread myth regarding cold-weather installations. To be fair, it is based somewhat on truth: if it gets TOO cold, installations can’t be performed.
That said, it must get VERY cold before temperature becomes prohibitive. The primary problem with replacing windows and doors in the winter is that caulking (the sealant around windows and doors that keep the elements out) won’t work at frigid temperatures; typically, -10 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, materials such as vinyl become harder to work with. Also, installers start getting frostbite (more on this later).
In summary, while there is some truth to the cold weather myth, windows and doors can be installed during all but the coldest winter days.
Myth 2: Installers don’t want to work in the cold.
Everyone can understand this myth. After all, who does want to work in the cold?
Actually, most window and door installers do. This is because they tend to be moving around so much that they are able to stay warm. They are also able to dress in multiple layers.
This is in contrast to the summer, when they are often busiest. Performing physically demanding labour in the hottest months of the year quickly becomes exhausting, and it doesn’t help that there are only so many layers a worker can remove!
For these reasons, installers tend to be quite comfortable and enjoy working in the colder months.
Myth 3: It is more expensive to have windows and doors installed in the winter than in other seasons.
This myth is a result of a belief in the first two myths. If winter installations are challenging, and installers don’t like to do them, it stands to reason that they will be more expensive.
The good news is, not only is the above false, but the opposite is true. Because people tend to believe Myth 3, winters tend to be slow for window and door installers. This lack of work trickles down to window and door manufacturers.
The result?
Installers discount their services during winter months, and manufacturers discount their products in the winter.
